The World Tourism Forum Lucerne organized the Start-Up Innovation Camp & Summit in Ras Al Khaimah, UAE on 18 & 19 January. With about 150 guests including even His Highness Sheikh Saud Bin Saqr Al Qasimi, 13 speakers and 12 selected start-ups the event was a great success.

Regrettably, we have decided to postpone the Indian Start-Up Innovation Camp due to be held in New Delhi on 15-16 December. The emergence of the Omicron variant and associated travel restrictions, including mandatory quarantines, make it impossible for us to go ahead as planned. We’re looking back on our first fantastic free Online Meetup which took place on 29 April and was broadcast live from Andermatt, Switzerland. The virtual event featured a selection of thought-provoking and inspiring speakers. It was attended by hundreds of participants from around the world. Many interacted with insightful questions and joined the discussion afterwards in the live networking session.

The event will initiate a discussion around the sustainability of the industry's existing business models and examine radical new approaches. The 12 finalists were invited by WTFL to Lucerne and present a poster of their research. In a Career Planning Session organized by Korn Ferry, the Young Talents received some most valuable expert advice on how to advance their career and how to network and market themselves. 230 start-ups hailing from 60 countries applied for WTFL Start-Up Innovation Camp 2019, 15 of them made it to the finals and pitched their novel ideas and visions in front of jury and audience. The international jury has chosen 15 finalists for the 4th Start-Up Innovation Camp in Lucerne from 1 to 2 May 2019. The finalists come from the Hospitality, Mobility, Destination, Transaction and Impact categories. The Start-Up Innovation Camp will be held prior to the 6th World Tourism Forum Lucerne (2–3 May 2019), when the five winners of the competition will be presented on the Forum's main stage. Valerie from Modul University Vienna in Austria says that the number of gateway cities like Amsterdam are facing severe issues as tourism is growing out of hand. NEW COLLABORATIONS

Our President & CEO Martin Barth visited Greece to work on a new collaboration with the Region of Peloponnese. The Peloponnese Region is an ideal partner for the pilot cooperation program in sustainable tourism product development. Regional governor Petros Tatoulis noted that regional authorities are working on a sustainable model for the parallel development of tourism in harmony with community needs. Best practices will be presented at World Tourism Forum Lucerne in May 2019.

YOUNG TALENT PROGRAMME 2019

In the end of June the participants of the Young Talent Programme 2019 have been determined. The academic committee of the World Tourism Forum Lucerne had a difficult task to select the most promising abstracts out of over 70 outstanding applications. 40 students of our partner universities are now eligible to send in a full paper until the end of September for the second round of the competition. In a subsequent peer-reviewed process a final group of candidates will be hand-picked to participate at the Forum 2019.

START-UP INNOVATION CAMP 2018 APPLICATION IS CLOSED!

We received over 200 applications from 54 different countries. In the next weeks, our jury members will carefully evaluate the applications and select the finalists who will be invited to Malaysia. WTFL Start-Up Innovation Camp 2018will take place in Langkawi, Malaysia, integrated in PATA Travel Mart 2018, on 12 September.
